Small and brave - these are the two most striking characteristics of Issun Bôshi. His mother had wished for a child so much that she cautiously added, "Even if it is very small. And indeed, a son is born to the elderly parents: just one inch (three centimeters) tall. From now on he is called Issun Bôshi, the one-inch boy.
The parents lovingly raise the boy until one day he realizes that he will not grow any further. So he leaves his parents' house and sets off on a journey to find his place in the world. And since he sees himself as a swordsman, a samurai, he equips himself accordingly: A sewing needle is his sword, a soup bowl his boat, and as an oar he uses chopsticks.
As in any fairy tale, Issun Bôshi must of course go through a number of adventures, and in these he fights so bravely that he is rewarded with a real princess at the end.
